It ended in a heavy defeat at the league leaders for Viking, in a match that the visitors were in control of, until a second of madness from Peter Ijeh.
The dark blue team from Stavanger took the lead through Nigerian Peter Ijeh, who scored his forth goal of the season. Lillestrøm goalkeeper Heinz Muller could only parry the shot from Søren Berg and it ended up at Ijehs feet and he coolly slotted the ball in the back of the net.
Viking were the better team, putting the home side under constant pressure and giving them little time on the ball. However, on 28 minutes everything changed. Ijeh was clearly pushed over by Lillestrøm defender Frode Kippe, but instead of giving Viking a free-kick he waved play on and the ball ended up at the feet of Magnus Myklebust, who equalised for the home side. Ijeh was furious and said either “f*** you” or “f*** off” in the face of the referee three or four times. When the referee showed the yellow card to the Nigerian striker, Ijeh continued to swear and the man in black had no choice but to show the red card.
It was an uphill battle for the rest of the match for the visitors, but they managed to keep Lillestrøm quiet for most of the match. It wasn’t until the 71st minute that the league leaders finally created something. Bjørn Helge Riise beat the offside trap and slotted the ball in the back of the net and straight afterwards it was 3-1 through a second Magnus Myklebust goal.
With four minutes to go, Canadian international Olivier Occean made it 4-1 to complete the misery for Viking, and at the end of the match it went from bad to worse for the dark blues from Stavanger as Jone Samuelsen was given his second yellow card for punching the ball away.
Viking manager Uwe Rösler was frustrated with the lack of discipline in the side saying: “There are no excuses. The red cards are unnecessary and have a big impact on the game. If you get booked, you have to be able to control yourself."
The German also admits that disciplinary action from the club may follow saying: “Something has to be done so that this never happens again.”
